Sealants are one of the simplest, most effective preventive treatments in dentistry. The application takes only a few minutes per tooth, requires no drilling or numbing, and can protect a tooth for years.
Who benefits from sealants
Sealants are most often placed on children's permanent molars soon after they erupt, usually around ages 6 and 12. Adults with deep grooves or a history of cavities can benefit as well. During your exam, Dr. Gibson will let you know whether sealants make sense for you or your child.
How sealants are applied
- The tooth is cleaned and dried
- A mild conditioning gel helps the sealant bond to enamel
- The sealant is painted into the grooves and hardened with a light
- We check your bite and you are done, with no recovery time
Common questions
How long do sealants last?
Sealants commonly last several years. We check them at every exam and can easily touch up or replace a sealant that has worn.
Are sealants safe?
Yes. Sealants have been used safely for decades and are recommended by the American Dental Association and the CDC as an effective way to prevent cavities.
