Composite fillings are also mercury-free and do not expand and contract with temperature the way metal does, which helps protect against cracks over time.
What to expect
A filling appointment usually takes under an hour. We numb the area, remove the decay, clean the cavity, and place the composite in thin layers that are hardened with a light. We then shape and polish the filling and check your bite. Any numbness wears off within a few hours and you can eat as soon as it does.
Replacing old metal fillings
Older amalgam fillings can corrode, leak or crack the tooth around them. If an existing filling is failing, we can replace it with a tooth-colored one or, if the damage is extensive, a porcelain crown. We do not recommend replacing healthy metal fillings for cosmetic reasons alone, but we are happy to discuss options with you.
Common questions
How long do composite fillings last?
Typically seven to ten years or longer, depending on size, location and your bite. We check all fillings at every exam.
